Choosing the right grip size and feel can make a significant difference in your golf game.  Proper grip size is tied to the length of your fingers and palms. A grip that is too small results in too much finger pressure, leading to tension in your hands and arms. That can have a negative effect on you swing tempo and cause fatigue. A grip that is too large causes a player to grip the club too much in their palms which reduces wrist and hand action, leading to a loss of clubhead speed and an open clubface.

Club Fitters use a Golf Grip Fitting Template to help players with the right size grip. It measures from your longest finger to the crease in your wrist. Standard grips are typically for players with hands measuring 6 1/2 to 7 1/2 inches from the crease to the tip of the middle finger. Players outside this range usually need a smaller of larger grip to ensure comfort and control.  Keep in mind this is only a starting point as the final choice is a matter of personal preference and feel.

Grips also come in a variety of materials and moisture management. A player may prefer a softer rubber grip to dampen vibration or a firmer grip such as a half or full cord. It’s a good idea to see a qualified club fitter that can help you determine the correct size and material preference.
